Buhain made his mark in international swimming by winning the Gold Medal (400m Individual Medley) at the 1985 SEA Games held at Bangkok, Thailand, making it an unprecedented accomplishment that brought pride to the country. In 1989, he made history again at the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This time, Buhain won the Gold Medal in the 200m and 400m Individual Medley, as well as the 200m Butterfly category. He also clinched the Silver Medal for the 100m Butterfly category. This accomplishment earned him the SEA Games Coca-Cola Gold Award of "Best Male Athlete of the SEA Games", further propelling him to greater fame. After that, Buhain won Gold Medal for 100m Butterfly, Silver Medal for the 100m Breast Stroke category and Bronze Medal for the 200m Individual Medley during the 1993 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore. In the subsequent years, Buhain continued to be an inspiration to countless athletes and the community in general. He has constantly endeavored to raise the country's standard of performance and governance in Philippine sports in his later roles as chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission as well as the Games and Amusement Board.
