Before becoming a successful chef, Gene Gonzalez was a former member of Kundirana during his stay in La Salle Green Hills. He then rose to fame as a well known fencer by winning back-to-back saber team gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore (1993) and in Chiang Mai (1995). He also won the gold medals in the 1995 and 1997 National Games. In the international Martini and Rossi Cup, he bagged three championships under the saber team category.
