Johnny, was the youngest Filipino to ever reach the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon – Junior Division. He was the No. 1 player of the Philippines from 1960 to 1964 and the last Filipino gold medallist in the Asian Games for tennis. Together with brother Gueng, they dominated the junior tennis division and the men’s doubles division. For his achievement in tennis, he was honored with the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) award in 1960 and was inducted into the Lasallian Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
