The man credited with leading the masterplanning of Makati City and laying the foundation for the area that become the financial capital of the Philippines is a Lasallian. The legendary late Col. Joseph Ralph McMicking is a product of De La Salle College and Stanford University. He married Mercedes Roxas Zobel in 1931 and joined his wife's family business, Ayala y Cia (now called Ayala Corporation), were he served as managing partner. During World War II, he was one of the staff officers ordered to leave Corregidor with General Douglas MacArthur and was a member of MacArthur's staff in Brisbane, Australia where he served as an Intelligence Officer. After the War, Don Alfonso Zobel de Ayala and Col. McMicking transformed 930 hectares of the original Hacienda Makati into an integrated residential and business community. Mr. McMicking was CEO of Ayala Corporation from 1931 to 1967. Mr. and Mrs. McMicking cofounded the Filipinas Foundation, Inc. (now known as the Ayala Foundation). In 1967, they established the Ayala Museum in Makati. They also established the Joseph R. &t Mercedes Z. McMicking Foundation for children's education in San Francisco. One of Mr. McMicking's fondest quotes, “The gift of an education is the real gift that one can give" embodies the spirit and mission statement of the foundation. In honor of Col. McMicking, the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) campus is called the Joseph R. McMicking Campus. Col. Joseph R. McMicking died in 1990. Both Col. and Mrs. McMicking were buried in the Philippines, the country they both loved and always considered their home.
