DLSAA Distinguished Lasallian Awardee
DLSU granted an honorary Doctor of Business Management degree to CARLOS J. VALDES in 1984 for his many achievements in private and public life. He was born on November 10, 1919, in Bacolor, Pampanga, and entered the primary grade at St. Theresa's College in 1930. He shifted to the Ateneo de Manila, where he was gold medalist in both the elementary and secondary courses, and took his BSC in La Salle in 1940. He took graduate studies at Far Eastern University in 1941, and earned his Ll.B. degree in 1949 from the Philippine Law School. At these two institutions he was on a scholarship grant. Armed with this broad academic preparation, he opened his own law office where he soon attracted many prominent clients in the business community. As a devout Catholic he was made the Knight Commander of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and of the Papal Order of Malta. He became a director of Fidelity Surety and Assurance Company, and of Monte de Piedad and Savings Bank owned by the Manila Archdiocese. He was a member and officer of several civic and social organizations. He served as president of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants which voted him the Outstanding CPA of the year 1970, and eight years later, the Outstanding CPA in Public Service. Ateneo gave hire the alumni award in 1962, and La Salle the St. John Baptist de la Salle medal for lay leadership in 1967. He was the head and founder of the DLSU Graduate School of Business, and former president and vice-president of the alumni association. Valdes became a member of the Constitutional Assembly in 1971, and shortly thereafter was named to an ambassadorial post in Europe. He is currently our ambassador to Japan.
