Edgar
O. Chua BS Chemical Engineering 1978 In
recognition of achievements in business management
Ed started his career with the Shell companies barely a year out of
college in 1979. Armed with a degree in chemical engineering from DLSU,
he conscientiously earned his way up the corporate ladder, first as a
sales representative for the then-known Shell Chemical Company
(Philippines) Inc. and internal auditor for Pilipinas Shell Petroleum
Corporation in the early ‘80s to General Manager of The Shell Company of
Cambodia in the mid-‘90s. By the new millennium Ed had become the ASEAN
general manager of Shell Oil Products – East, Singapore. In
September 2003 Ed took post as the country chairman of Shell companies
in the Philippines (SciP), where he holds the position together with
that of local senior oil representative to this day. Ed’s business
proficiency in the chemical, auditing, supply planning, corporate,
sales, and general management fields secured him senior posts both in
and out of the Philippines. His prolific industry knowledge also gave
him several regional assignments and accolades, one of which was a Gold
Medal for Outstanding Leadership in Chemical Engineering by the
Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineering. Ed’s
progressive approach to nation building via sustainable development
advocacies led to a 2005 Communication Excellence in Organizations (CEO)
Excel Award. The award recognized his leadership in SciP programs that
included millennium development initiatives, health and safety goals,
and corporate social responsibility. That same year, Ed Chua presented a
check donation of P1 million to De La Salle University-Manila’s
chemical engineering department for the formal establishment of the
Shell Companies in the Philippines Scholarship Endowment in Chemical
Engineering. Concurrent with his posts as chairman and president of
Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation are stations as vice-chairman and

Enriquez GS 1964, LSGH HS 1968, AB-Commerce 1973
In recognition of achievements in public service broadcasting
It is hard to believe that Mike, an internationally-renowned
broadcaster with a warm personality, trademark booming voice and a
career spanning 38 years, literally stumbled upon his profession quite
simply, by accident. The former altar boy enrolled at De La Salle
University instead of prior plans on joining the Franciscan priesthood. A
few years into college in 1969, a then-19 year old Mike accompanied a
friend to a short-staffed radio station, bagged the job the day after,
and has since become a member of the Manila Broadcasting Company and is
actively involved in the Kapisanan Ng Mga Brodkaster Sa Pilipinas (KBP),
the Metro Manila chapter of which he was founding chairman,
vice-president for radio and television, chairman, and in 1992,
president. He joined GMA Network, Incorporated in late 1995
with a television anchoring post in Saksi, which would later on win the
Gold Medal in the New York Festivals in 2003. He also anchors two other
GMA prime-time, top-rated TV public-affairs newscasts, 24 Oras and
Imbestigador. The latter features an intrepid hands-on investigative
approach to civil and criminal case-solving and is one of GMA’s
highest-rating programs. Mike led “Team Baghdad,” a six-man
GMA news team and the first Filipino team to do so into Baghdad, to file
live reports about the recent Iraq war. Their documentary, “Iraq – In
the Navel of War” won the Silver Camera Award in the 2004 U.S. Film and
Video Festival. He has been the recipient of multiple Golden Dove
Awards for Best Male Newscaster for TV and radio, the Ka Doroy Valencia
Broadcaster of the Year Award, the Star Award for Best Male Newscaster
from the Philippine Movie Press Club, and Best Newscaster in the Asian
Television Awards in Singapore as the only Filipino awardee to date.
Several awards from the Catholic Mass Media have also been honored him,
as well as an Outstanding TV Host from Volunteers Against Crime and
Corruption and the several Anak TV Seal Awards for Child Friendly
Television Host. A former Broadcast Management faculty
member at De La Salle University, Mike is currently the Senior
Vice-President for Radio of GMA Network, Inc. and President of RGMA
Network, Inc., their provincial affiliate. |

L. Lacson, Jr. USLS GS 1961, USLS HS 1965, BS Commerce
1969 In recognition of achievements in community
development Daniel “Bitay” Lacson has been a
prominent fixture in the Visayan political and socio-civic schemes,
having served as governor of Negros Occidental from 1986 to 1992. A
business major in the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City – where
he took both his primary and secondary years as well – his resolute
belief in local business endeavors was evident in his support for the
Association of Negros Producers, to which he provided generous aid.
Under Governor Bitay’s succor and encouragement of small- and
medium-scale entrepreneurs, the association’s enterprises were furnished
a handicraft showroom and given government network assistance. The
association, initiated by 15 housewives of members of the Negros
Business Forum, now provides income to more than 12,000 employees and
organizes the Philippines’ longest-running trade fair for Negros-made
products in Manila. In 1986, Governor Bitay was recognized
with a Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines Award for
Community Service. A University of St. La Salle Fides Award then
followed a year later. In 1988 he spearheaded Project Dungganon, another
micro-enterprise project that at present has provided around P 500
million worth of funds for its 70,000-strong membership. In
1998, President Fidel V. Ramos presented Governor Bitay with the Golden
Heart Presidential Award for his services to the community and as
presidential adviser for rural development and chair of the presidential
council for countryside development. Governor Bitay is also chairman
emeritus of the Negros Navigation Company, founding chairman of the
Negros Business Forum, and, in 1994, was awarded an honoris causa degree
by University of St. La Salle – Bacolod, his Alma Mater. |

Augusto L. Syjuco (Cesare A.X. Syjuco) GS 1965, LSGH HS
1969, AB 1974 In recognition of achievements in
culture and arts Cesare A.X. Syjuco, contemporary
multimedia genius, has been mastering the fusion of art and literature
with stunning results since his maverick days in De La Salle College.
Comprehensive studies in painting, graphic design, creative writing, and
the audio-visual arts, mixed with a daring 1970s post-modernistic
movement, paved the way for his flourishing art career, one that
includes masterpieces in the written, visual, musical, and philosophical
arts and which, at present, has been richly peppered with both local
and international prizewinning accolades. A true arts
iconoclast and touted as the “Radical Renaissance Man” by peers,
Cesare’s audacious aesthetics and critically-acclaimed one-man
exhibitions earned him, among others, the Gerry Roxas Foundation
Presidential Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts, the Gawad
CCP Award for the Visual Arts, the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for
Literature in English Poetry, and UNESCO Paris Gold Medals for
Photography and Design. He was also the country’s very first Purita
Kalaw-Ledesma Awardee for Art Criticism. In 1991, Cesare’s
disarming literary hybrids compounded with years of international praise
and distinction as the generation’s “Golden Boy of Philippine Art”
merited him a Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines Award
for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts. He earnestly dedicated the
award to his beloved late father, Don Augusto G. Syjuco (BSC ’40).
Cesare’s mysterious disappearance from the art scene in 1992
further mythologized his career and catapulted him into cult figure
status amongst his contemporaries. In 2004, he held his first major solo
exhibition Flashes of Genius, another bold yet well-funneled transmedia
foray that was touted by critics and fans alike as an excellent and
most welcome comeback. He recently released a collection of
his poetry and music, A Sudden Rush of Genius; a DVD boxed set of his
live performances, A Flagrant Display of Shamelessness; and displayed
his trademark avant-gardism with shows like Mighty Big Headstand and
Homonyms of Recent History this 2007, curated by his wife and
award-winning painter Jean Marie. |

Jose S. Valenciano LSGH GS 1978, LSGH HS 1982
In recognition of achievements in contemporary music
Unbeknownst to many, Gary Valenciano’s first venture into the business
came in the part of a soda commercial when he was merely 11 years old.
Under the encouragement of supportive parents, Gary’s talent blossomed
with stints in singing and theater in La Salle Green Hills’ production
of Oliver!, and, more notably, in 1981 when the then-unknown high school
senior was immediately accepted into the Kundirana after an outstanding
audition. By the time Gary had graduated from high school
with exceptional vocal training under his belt he was already creating a
buzz within the industry. Guest spots on Pilita and Jacqui, Penthouse
Live, and Germspesyal and live music gigs in Tavern on the Square
solidified his place as a talented and inspired young performer.
Since then Mr. Pure Energy – as he is fittingly and fondly referred to
by fans and media – has lived up to his nickname by taking the
Philippine, and later on international, music and entertainment industry
by storm. He has recorded over 21 multi-awarded albums and earned more
than 200 awards and nominations for his work, including 14 Awit Awards,
and, among countless others, the 1996 Artist in Excellence Award by the
Fil-American Exposition in California, two Anak TV Seal Awards in 2004
and 2006, and numerous MTV awards for hit songs and videos. He is also a
2001 Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines Awardee for
Contemporary Music. A devout Christian, Gary prefers to use
his celebrity for more philanthropic endeavors, particularly through his
assignment as the first and current UNICEF National Ambassador of
Goodwill in the Philippines. Also nearest and dearest to his heart is
the Shining Light Foundation, Gary’s own charity arm which he founded in
1989 and co-manages with his wife, Angeli. Other causes he is actively
involved are juvenile diabetes and typhoon relief. As a
singer, dancer, composer, and music producer, Gary has performed in
various prestigious international concerts and festivals in Asia,
Europe, and the U.S. His recent crossover to more inspirational music
made him the perfect choice for “Side by Side (The Spirit of the
Games),” the anthem and theme song of the 15th Asian Games in Doha,
Qatar, which he interpreted in 2006. |
| George
T. Yang BSBA 1962, MBA Wharton School University of
Pennsylvania 1964 In recognition of achievements in
entrepreneurship People aged 25 and below, or those
with children that age, know of, have heard of, have worked for, or at
the very least have patronized a George Yang product. As the Filipino
proprietor and later on, Chairman of the Board of Golden Arches
Development Corporation or McDonald’s Philippines, “George McDonald” had
revolutionized the fast food industry with his introduction of the
first local franchise of the famous American fast food restaurant in
September 1981. George, having employee experience with a
cigarette company prior to his venture into fast food, epitomized the
hands-on businessman who truly, and quite literally, started from the
ground up. Six months intensive training as a crew member of a
McDonald’s branch in Hong Kong soon earned the industrious entrepreneur
the rights to the Philippine franchise. With the opening of the first
store in Morayta, then later on Cubao, Greenhills, and Makati,
McDonald’s quickly set the standard for restaurant service,
presentation, cleanliness, and meal marketing. Now with more
than 240 branches and 14,000 employees, George’s McDonald’s set the bar
and became the model for countless other brands. Through dint of hard
work he had successfully paved the way for a whole new fast food culture
in the Philippines, and one that included a strict, dignified, yet
student-friendly work environment to boot. As the chair of
McDonald’s Philippines, George also spends his time giving back to
communities most dear to his heart – families and children – via the
Ronald McDonald House Charities. Programs such as the Bright Minds Read,
Bayan Ko, Love Ko, Bahay Bulilit, and Hapay na Mangga, a McDonald’s
Village in Taytal, Rizal, are all part of RMHC’s social-conscious
efforts. Apart from quiet charity work, George may also be found
occasionally gracing friends’ weddings with his singing chops.
George, a business administration graduate of De La Salle College, has
received recognition as an Outstanding Business Executive, was given a
Kaunlaran Award as Outstanding Business Executive in 1982 and
Outstanding Manilan in Business in 1989. He has also received several
accolades from San Beda College, his grade school and high school alma
mater, including the 2001 Bedan of the Century Award in Business, the
2004 Most Distinguished Bedan Award, and the 2005 Distinguished
Professorial Chair in Business Management. In 2006, George Yang was the
unequivocal choice for the Lifetime Achievement Award given by the
Philippine Franchise Association. |
