Bowler Mixer Insights

Some of the DLSAA- East Coast chapter's newest members at the first Bowling Mixer of the group, Aug. 2008, NYC

In August 2008, the East Coast Chapter held a Bowling Mixer that brought in new members and helped them bond in an activity not held by the Chapter in years. Here are thoughts from two new, active members.

The Bowling Mixer hosted by the highly organized De La Salle Alumni Association-East Coast of the USA in August 2008 highlighted the group's positive attributes, i.e., morale-building and camaraderie. Reserving lanes at the newly-renovated venue within Port Authority in Manhattan, near Times Square, 2008 member Archie Alvarez and the group had a blast as almost everyone had a strike, or at least close to one! This venue is considered one of New York City's secrets (well, not anymore after we all told others afterward). Within the bustling main NYC bus station where people are rushing day and night to catch their ride is a hip, sensurround-sound, neon-lighted bowling alley with a DJ. Almost all attendees were brand new members, and one thing for sure, everyone had a blast! One such fun moment was when the group collaborated on answering the quiz posed by the DJ, "What is the world's largest desert?" Sahara, Gobi? Nope. Manny Calupig (DLS-Z and CSB) threw out "Antarctica" and so it was!(Look it up.) A free game was awarded. But that's for another day.

- Carlo Zenarosa (DLS-Dasmarinas)

Unbeknownst to daily commuters rushing to and from their respective bus lanes, tucked inside the gray, charmless Port Authority Bus Terminal building is one of the city's premier spots for bowling, just right under their noses, yet a world away. Luckily, the DLSAA East Coast chapter was in on the secret, and thus on a balmy Saturday night in early August, members gathered at Leisure Time Bowl for a festive evening of socializing and testing their skills at the lanes.

A sizable number of the alumni in attendance were new members attending a La Salle alumni chapter event for the first time, a fact that pleased chapter president Robert P de Tagle, who has made it a priority to expand the membership rolls and nurture the organizational skills of the current batch of officers. Despite their just having met, group members were soon shouting encouragement at each other's efforts, high-fiving when strikes were recorded, and playfully ribbing fellow La Sallians for errant throws that wind up in the gutter.

After a couple of hours worth of bowling, the group went to a restaurant for a late dinner. Several upcoming fundraising events and issues were also discussed, including the partnership with the Ateneo Alumni Northeast to raise funds with the Ateneo Chamber Singers concert (gamely taken on as a major project by Carlo Zenarosa).

Fun, energy, laughter, food and exercise. What's not to like?
