2007-06-07 Philippine Independence Day Gala Ball

LSPAADC helped make this event a success! Eileen Nadal (PRO) was part of the decorations committee. They assembled beautiful centerpieces made with long stemmed orchids set in native ‘banig’ pots and sold to donors at the event. I prepared the powerpoint slides used for display throughout the evening in 2 giant screen projections. We were also invited to participate in a Rigodon presentation along with other leaders within the community including ambassador’s wife Mrs. Linda Gaa.

Other community events for the month of June

June 21 – Fil-am youth festival. A fun packed day featuring sports (basketball, track, soccer, badminton and tennis), Philippine games, workshop on folk dancing, hip-hop, arnis/eskrima martial arts, cultural dialogue, live musical performances and many more. FREE and open to the public. Bishop O’Connell High School 6600 Little Falls Rd. Arlington, VA 22213. www.filamyouth.com.

June 29 – Community Picnic/Sports Fest. Fun for entire family. Pack your picnic baskets, relax and enjoy the day. Raffle winners for Northwest Airline tickets will also be drawn here. Tucker Road Recreation and Sports Center in Ft. Washington, MD. www.pafc-inc.org/pfcsports.

I’m resending these items for the new members to see and to add new picture links received since I last sent these out. Thank you Ricky Hembrador and Margot Atilano for the additional pictures.

A street festival showcasing the rich and diverse cultures that influenced the dance, music, cuisine and arts of the Philippines. The fair featured exotic food selections, handicrafts, family-oriented games, live band performances as well as a parade.

Our day started early! Eileen Nadal or PRO is a volunteer helping out the Food vendor committee to ensure that we have enough food vendors and that they know all the rules. We took part in the parade, marching behind our banner wearing our green and white Animo La Salle shirts! A total of 43 shirts were distributed and we received about 16 new member information sheets!!! The Biker and Hiker group were also there with their bikes on the parade!

Everyone was so proud to be part of the team! Though we did not win any awards during the parade we will definitely come out strong next year! Thank you all for your support!

Seven families braved the elements and had a fun memorial day weekend! We arrived shortly before noon, our camp was on the second highest point of the entire park (almost 4,000 ft above sea level), pitched our tents, almost towed away Ricky's Jeep because he was on time, took a hike to one of the water falls, Longanishi for lunch on the trail, took lots of pictures, had to backtrack because I left my backpack on a rock, enjoyed some views, tried to fly pirate ship kite, played with freezbees, cooked dinner on propane burners, had ginataan with bilo-bilo for desert, started a bonfire, had smores, and more smores, walked around the camp area to watch an exciting powerpoint presentation by park employees, marveled on the huge number of stars you can see, listned to the owl's as we slept. Woke up to Hotdogs, spam, eggs and Tocino and rice! Then off to the river down the valley for an 8 mile canoe ride. For a couple of our canoes it was literally a dunk!

I thank the Esteban family for their guidance and voice of experience. Thank you Eileen, our PRO, for taking care of all the arrangements. This is something we plan to do again and probably more often than once a year. Next time we will reserve the entire campsite block for La Salle!
